Peaceful Parenting - What’s In Your House?
One goal of the “Parenting on Track” program is to help parents create a peaceful relationship with their children — one where kindness, communication, cooperation, and responsibility take precedence over power struggles, resistance, threats, and frustration. It takes time for parents to develop this relationship and truly incorporate it into their daily lives. But it is worth the endeavor, knowing that we are creating peaceful households and teaching our children to use compassion and cooperation when dealing with others.
A great example of using the “Parenting on Track” methods can be found in the article “Peaceful Parenting” by Sura Hart and Victoria Kindle Hodson. You can find it online at the Greater Good magazine web site.
In this article, Hart and Hodson describe the advantages of the “power-with” parenting approach, as opposed to the “power-over” parenting approach. They discuss the benefits of connecting with your children’s feelings and needs while honoring your own at the same time. By making this connection, you and your child will be able to cooperate in finding mutually agreeable solutions to even small, everyday problems.

Thanks for sharing. Creative parenting often leads to a peaceful household. Nice job being flexible, staying with it, using Family Meetings effectively and being truly committed to what it takes to create peace between 2 individuals who experience the world in unique way.

I could not read the article as the link was broken; however this is what I have learned using this program for peaceful parenting. Nothing sends me over the edge as far and quickly as having to do all the housework alone. Then I start sniping at my child that she should be helping out. Not very peaceful, I’m afraid.
However, after having participated in family meetings for about 2 years, my 10 year old daughter is now surprising me by coming up with her own strategies about doing cooperations (or in other words helping out around the house). And I am sure always to let her try them out instead of enforcing my old ideas. And that leads to peace! And a fairly clean house.
