Life Happens at 18, Will they be Ready?

At 16, a light bulb suddenly goes on. BOOM! Kids realize they have just a few years to master the biggest, most challenging skills before departing for their solo journey. Even if their parents haven’t admitted that they are leaving home – kids certainly know what is on the horizon. And depending on how prepared they are in self-skills, home skills, and social skills, determines how much they look forward to this last push towards independence.

This is when they test the relationship they’ve held with us, as parents. They test the strength: is is fractured or strong and healthy? Then they decide whether they will include their parents in this last spurt of growth.

Take a moment to imagine what this time is like for a kid who came from a family who believed in him, invited him, trained him and encouraged him to take on more of life’s tasks and master the skills along the way.

VS.

A kid whose parents waited on him, confined him as a young child, never let him contribute to the home, nagged him through adolescence, devalued his interest in social skills and now he finds himself unprepared on the scariest walk of his life.

Obviously, the first child will have a more confident experience! This is the goal. Of course, we’d never set out to raise unprepared children. But the truth is, we may not realize until it’s too late. Parenting On Track™ is here to help you, as parents, provide the training and support for when “real life” happens.
